History of Gig Rowing and TRRC

For centuries the rowing of gigs in one way, shape or form was heavily intertwined with Cornish day-to-day life and culture. However, after the demise of gigs for carrying pilots and as lifeboats (not to mention smuggling), only crews in Newquay and on the Isles of Scilly continued to row them. This changed in the 80's, and Truro River Rowing Club has the distinction of being the oldest of the 'new' generation of pilot gig clubs.

The timeline below shows some of the key events for gig rowing in general, as well as events specific to TRRC. At the bottom of the page is an album with historic photos and scans of selected newspaper articles describing some noteworthy events.
